Public Toilet, Kyabirwa, Uganda
Located at the southern end of the Kyabirwa Surgical Center Campus, this sculptural toilet building provides essential hygiene facilities for patients. It includes four private rooms divided into male and female sections, with mirrored sloped tin roofs and large upper openings to maximize natural airflow. Translucent polycarbonate sheets bring in daylight while maintaining privacy. A covered foot-washing station accommodates patients arriving from dusty roads.
Built with local labor using concrete blocks and corrugated tin sheets, the design challenges the stigma of tin as low-quality by emphasizing form, function, and dignity. Waste is channeled to a buried septic system for safe disposal.
