Kyabirwa Ward Building, Kyabirwa, Uganda
Located near the White Nile River rapids in the village of Kyabirwa, Uganda, this new facility is designed as an annex to the existing Surgical Center. Serving a rural population in a remote setting, the building responds to the need for short-term overnight care following surgical procedures. The facility includes an overnight patient ward, a state-of-the-art medical laboratory, and essential staff support spaces. An open-air cafeteria provides daily meals for staff while reinforcing a sense of community on campus. A secondary protective roof is shaped to echo the movement of the nearby Nile rapids while collecting rainwater and enhancing natural ventilation. The building is clad in locally produced clay tiles, with steel components fabricated by local ironworkers and constructed using both skilled and unskilled local labor. Electrical power is supplied through the existing Surgical Center’s solar array, ensuring reliable and sustainable energy for daily operations.
