Greenwich School, Greenwich, CT

This addition and renovation project presents a unique opportunity to rebalance the school’s interior and exterior circulation while unifying the campus into a cohesive learning environment. The design addresses existing level changes and inefficient pathways by connecting multiple buildings through a new classroom wing, shared commons, and a series of thoughtfully designed courtyards. A centrally located main entrance improves security, simplifies access to the main office, and establishes a clear organizational anchor for the campus. A new ADA-accessible entrance plaza, positioned between historic buildings, enhances accessibility while managing stormwater and reducing water infiltration issues. The contemporary entrance structure respectfully complements the historic architecture while creating a visible and welcoming identity along Sound Beach Avenue. A light-filled connector extending from the new student commons forms two distinct courtyards, including an outdoor amphitheater and an early childhood play area, linking the Kindergarten addition to the Gym and Cafeteria. With collapsible doors and a glass roof, the new commons becomes a bright, flexible gathering space that seamlessly connects indoor and outdoor learning experiences.
